Art opinion on Guernica by Pablo Picasso

Guernica, 1973 by Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso is one of the most famous painters, ceramicists, and designers in the modern world. Something that strikes me in this painting is the geometric faces that can be expressed as suffering. At first, I thought that they were the different personalities that a human being can experience worse than noticing that every face design is outrageous. It makes me think that in this world there is bad and not just good. It also makes me feel a bit scared as it may be a representation of hell on earth. There is a very representative animal that is the bull, it has horns and a shocking look. A beast and a sun are also observed. This sun makes me immediately think of a light and I interpret it as the famous phrase that people tell you when you are trying to find hope, "There is always a light after the tunnel." After so much suffering, there will always be a light to guide us.

A very interesting connection that I found in this artwork is that Picasso wanted to represent the war in the Nazi period. In fact, the picture itself depicts a lot of suffering. A very dark period of humanity. He lived in those dark years and tried to express with his cubic and geometric style, the suffering of our brothers and sisters during that time. I think he also tries to express the coldness of wars as a symbol that they will not be repeated in the future. It is something that is analyzed a lot in the humanities field. How can we change? What can we do differently? And how can we remember this artwork to express what our ancestors had to suffer due to political and religious differences? Questions that certainly leave me wondering about the coldness of past wars.
